March Birthstones

March has two birthstones:  Aquamarine and Bloodstone.

Aquamarine is a beautiful pale blue color which I believe corresponds to the Pisces (fish) zodiac sign quite nicely.   As I am born under this sign, I generally gravitate towards the cool calming ocean colors and I also love the sea.   Aquamarines were believed to have originated from the sea, and ancient Greeks and Romans used the stone as an amulet to guarantee sailors safe passage.  Medicinal and healing powers of this gemstone include the belief that it can help cure ailments of the stomach, liver, jaws (teeth) and throat.  Although mainly mined in Brazil, this gemstone can also be found in such exotic locales as Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, and Mozambique.  In the United States, the best place find this stone is in Colorado, North Carolina, and Maine.

Bloodstone is the other gemstone for March.    This gemstone, also known as a heliotrope, is a dark-green jasper infused with dashes of red iron oxide.  The healing powers for this gemstone date back to Babylonian times, when it was used to help cure blood disorders.  Bloodstone is commonly found in India, Brazil, and Australia.
